The weather is getting colder and as we drift closer to Halloween and Christmas, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all, but don't let that come at the expense of your health! As part of our #MyEveryStep campaign, we want to share our top Winter Wellness tips with you to make sure your health is in tip top shape all year round!
1. Keep Moisturised
The colder weather can be harsh on delicate skin, leading to dry, cracked skin, so make sure you keep moisturised. Ingredients such as shea butter can be great for keeping skin hydrated. Also, if your lips become cracked, you can simply exfoliate them with your toothbrush!
2. Pack your Diet with Omega 3 & Fibre
Omega 3 is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps reduce joint stiffness and even lowers depression (1), which is why it is so important to include it in your diet. Fish is an obvious source, but if you do not eat fish there are other options such as walnuts, brussel sprouts and chia seeds. Your immune system can also be lower during the winter months so keep your system strong with immune-boosting, fibre-filled foods such as mushrooms and spices (2).
3. Avoid the dreaded Cold & Flu Germs
Washing your hands is a good start, but make sure you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds; try singing 'Happy Birthday' whilst doing so if you struggle with keeping count, it's great for kids too! Anti-bacterial hand gels have become popular in recent years but watch how much you use them as they can dry out your hands and lower your immune system (3). If you are unlucky enough to catch a cold, you can relieve a sore throat and kill the germs by gargling green tea (4).
4. Stay Motivated with your Exercise Regime
It is easy to use the colder weather as an excuse for less exercise, but your body needs to keep moving all year round! Having pets is a great motivation as they are reliant on you to take them for their regular walks - just make sure you wrap up warm! But if you don't have pets and you find yourself dreading the cold outdoors, purchasing small at-home exercise tools is a great way to start. 5. Rest Up!
Unlike our fellow mammal friends such as bats and squirrels, humans are not lucky enough to have a hibernation period. There are less hours of light in Winter compared to Summer, which can leaves us feeling sluggish. To ensure you are ready for the day ahead, make sure you always get at least 8 hours sleep. A room temperature of 18C is perfect for this and a glass of milk will help you along the way too (yes, even for grown-ups!).
