Green Dentistry
Spotlight on sustainable dentistry
Our late Head Dental Officer, Louis Mackenzie, believed passionately in practising sustainable dentistry.
While sustainability is not specifically mentioned in the General Dental Council standards, many of our Denplan practice teams are already using a variety of methods to lead the way. They are increasing awareness of the environmental impact of dental care amongst staff, patients, other professionals and local communities.
How we’re helping our Dental practices to ‘think’ and ‘act’ green
Developing practice sustainability policies
Using online resources and educational series to communicate the ‘green’ vision to patients and staff
Measuring and evaluating sustainability improvements
Incorporating sustainability education in staff induction and training processes
Calculating and sharing information on the environmental (and financial) benefits of sustainable practice
Green Dentistry – what’s next?
We're in the process of setting up our Green Dentistry Advisory Board to guide sustainable dentist practices for the future and identify opportunities to accelerate and collaborate around environmental progress in the dental profession.
In 2023, in partnership with Professor Brett Duane, we’re also launching:
Live training sessions for dental practices
New online learning programmes
A useful Green Dentistry Toolkit for practitioners
A new carbon calculator pilot with action planning tools specifically for the Dental community
