Supporting Healthy & Happy Lives

Royal Voluntary Service wants to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age or ability. They are one of the largest voluntary service charities in Britain with over 25,000 volunteers helping 100,000 older people each month to stay active, independent and involved in their communities.

Research shows that as we age we can significantly benefit from maintaining an active social life and taking part in physical, social and mentally stimulating activities. Royal Voluntary Service currently runs weekly stimulating and sociable Healthy & Happy Lives groups that welcome older people and their carers in many locations across the country.

Positioned as a social, fun day out, groups are managed and delivered by local Royal Voluntary Service employees and volunteers at their Centres or other community venues, with a capacity of up to 16 people on a weekly or more frequent basis.

Carers and family members do not have to attend the group but are very welcome if they’d like to participate or to spend time at the Centres talking to other carers and volunteers. The groups can provide a valuable form of respite to carers.

Within this relaxed environment Royal Voluntary Service employees or volunteers can also discuss other needs the older person may have, such as a weekly befriending visit, help with small tasks at home or community transport. Being a volunteer-led organisation Royal Voluntary Service can reach far and wide into communities and offer holistic support packages to older people and their carers.

A typical group lasts 5 hours and includes:

  • Transport where required

  • A warm welcome and catch up with friends over coffee and cake

  • Resistance based exercises designed to strengthen muscles and improve balance

  • A nutritious protein rich two course lunch

  • Group activities including structured discussion, games, hobbies and crafts focussed on improving memory and having fun

  • Carers can join in or use the groups as valuable respite

Support from Simplyhealth will enable Royal Voluntary Service to run more Healthy & Happy Lives groups across Britain, making a tangible difference to the lives of those who attend and also those who care for an older family member.
