Depression study champions tomatoes

Published Date: 05 Dec 12

Researchers have claimed regularly eating tomatoes can help lower a person's chances of suffering depression.

A team from China and Japan completed the study, examining the mental health records and dietary habits of almost 1,000 men and women aged 70 or over.

They concluded eating tomatoes two to six times a week made people 46% less likely to suffer serious dips in their mood.

That might be all well and good for people who like tomatoes, but those not so keen could opt for a cash plan if they are concerned.

By receiving regular healthcare check-ups under the plan, people worried about depression may be able to spot signs earlier and receive appropriate treatment.

It is thought tomatoes are able to provide the mood lift because they are rich in antioxidant chemicals believed to offer protection against some diseases.

Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene, which previous research has linked to reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Researchers, led by Dr Kaijun Nio, from Tianjin Medical University, wanted to examine whether the antioxidant also offered benefits to our mental health.

The researchers wrote: "These results suggest that a tomato rich diet may have a beneficial effect on the prevention of depressive symptoms."

The results were published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
