Over a quarter of a million people helped celebrate the UK's first Simplyhealth Great Run Day by getting active and clocking up more than 1.5million miles of movement - the equivalent distance of running to the moon and back three times over.

The Simplyhealth Great Run Day is set to be the UK's most active day of the year, as exceptional numbers of people were inspired to get moving across the 9th and 10th September, which saw the world's biggest half marathon, the Simplyhealth Great North Run, take place in Newcastle.

Pam Whelan, Director of Corporate for Simplyhealth said: "At Simplyhealth, we recognise the importance of helping our own employees, our Simplyhealth health cash plan customers and all of the UK population to be fit and healthy helping them to make the most of life every day.

"We are thrilled that so many people were inspired by the Simplyhealth Great Run Day and got moving. The benefits of exercise are undisputed, promoting positive mental health and reducing physical illnesses such as heart disease and obesity. We're well on our way to achieving our goal of getting #MillionsMoving!"

Data from Strava, the social network for athletes, indicates that 190,103 runs were recorded in the UK over the weekend, suggesting that the day of the Simplyhealth Great North Run is set to be the most active day of the year.

Simplyhealth and Great Run used the power of the Simplyhealth Great North Run to motivate people to be part of the UK's most active weekend. The Simplyhealth Great Run Day was a celebration of movement as part of the #MillionsMoving campaign.

Its aim was to inspire people to get active in any way they wished, with activities such as walking, wheeling, climbing steps, hiking and yoga being logged on the Simplyhealth Great Run Day web hub.

In all, 564,964 of the miles were recorded by the record-breaking 43,127 finishers in the Simplyhealth Great North Run, the world's biggest half marathon which was won by Mo Farah for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time.

There are plans to expand on the initiative on the weekend of the 2018 Simplyhealth Great North Run, which will be held on 8th and 9th September next year.
