Earlier this year, we donated £4,500 to Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service to run its Phoenix programme in Andover.   The course, which has already been carried out at numerous other stations across the county, gives young people the opportunity to develop lifelong skills as they learn the core values of the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and train to complete a full fire drill. As we live longer, the prevalence of loneliness and isolation among the elderly increases. Is it inevitable?

Sometimes it isn't that a person is alone, it's the quality of social contact they lack.

We're a civilised society and yet many elderly neighbours live with virtually no communication with others for weeks on end. We assume they must have contact with somebody, just not us.

Caring for carers

As we all know the UK has an ageing population and with people working longer and having children later in life, it is likely there will be a rise in the number of 'sandwich' carers - those caring for children as well as elderly relatives. We also know that around 1 in 9 of the UK workforce are formal carers. However, this figure could be up to four times higher when including those who aren't receiving formal support for caring, but they will be experiencing many of the same difficulties and challenges. Taking on the challenge

On 23 April I'm taking on the London Marathon along with my husband and three others in aid of a close friend of mine's nine year old son called Zak, who has cerebral palsy. We're raising money for Whizz Kidz, a charity which provides specialist wheelchairs to children and young people with disabilities so that they can develop independence.   Continue Reading
