Catching up with Josie

Josie SteinsonToday we're chatting with Josie Steinson, who has recently taken up the role of Digital Optimisation Manager within our Digital Experience team. The team, which sits within our wider Customer and Brand team, is responsible for Simplyhealth's website and current and future digital experiences!

Let's jump in!

So, what first brought you to Simplyhealth?

I've actually been at Simplyhealth for some time now! I joined in 2004, in a role within the finance team. I've lived not far from Andover my entire life, and Simplyhealth - which at the time was still called HSA - seemed like a great place to work. 

How did you go from a finance role to one in digital?

In the 14 years I've been here, I've had a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. I actually studied marketing at college, and so when a Marketing Assistant role came up within a year of starting here, I decided to apply, and I was fortunate to be offered the role! It sat within the Corporate (B2B) Marketing team which was a great place to start my career in marketing as it gave me the chance to learn a lot!

I spent 2 years in that role, and while I was in it Simplyhealth supported me in the completion of my CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing.

I then moved into a Marketing Executive role within the Consumer Marketing team. This was around 2007 and when Simplyhealth were starting to look at digital more. So on top of my regular work, I started to work in the Digital Marketing space and really enjoyed it. So much so that I decided to do a professional qualification in Direct and Digital Marketing from the Institute of Digital Marketing, which Simplyhealth again supported me in completing. In 2009 a role (E-design Executive) came up within the eBusiness team, and I jumped at the chance to be part of the web team.

So you've been working in digital at Simplyhealth for nearly 9 years!

Yes. And we've seen lots of change in that time. I actually joined the eBusiness team when we were first launching - so it's been great to be a part of the growth and development of our site. I was promoted to User Experience Manager in 2010 - and have had a chance to do work on an array of different activities within digital. I've been involved in design, page builds, content management, digital marketing and analytics. It's really given me a fantastic foundation for my new role.

Tell us a bit about this new role!

Well our entire Digital Experience team has expanded, which means my role as Digital Optimisation Manager has a lot more focus and I'll be able to really specialise in my area which I'm so excited about. I'll be developing and delivering Simplyhealth's Conversion Rate Optimisation programme.    This means I'll be doing a lot of research and analysis to see how our site performs and how users interact / engage with our site before providing recommendations on how we can then improve the site performance and digital experiences, through an A/B and MVT testing programme.

You've been at Simplyhealth for a while now! What would you say is the main thing that's kept you around?

Well for starters I've never gotten bored. Simplyhealth has been so great in helping me develop and further my education. It's given me a chance to really dig my teeth into areas that excite me. Since starting here I've had two children, and the work life balance has been instrumental in helping me continue to work whilst also seeing my children growing up! After my second was born I was able to reduce my hours to 3 days per week. I've since upped that to 4 days, but I work one day from home. And my team, amongst others, has recently moved to a new Modern Working Environment that encourages agile working and makes it easy to work from home when/if we need to.
