Abbie Tarrant tells us about her role in the Compliance team
Name: Abbie Tarrant
Role: Assistant Compliance Officer
What brought you to Simplyhealth?
I had graduated from the University of Southampton with first class honours in law and was planning to go to law school starting in September 2015, in the meantime I wanted to find a job so I could save up some money. My Mum works for Simplyhealth and she suggested I apply for a vacancy as a Written Contact Advisor. It was on a 9 month contract which fit my schedule perfectly, so I applied and was successful.
September has been and gone and you're still here! What happened?
After starting my role in the Written Contact Team I realised that I actually was more interested in working in business than becoming a solicitor. I also really loved working for Simplyhealth - it's a great company, and I didn't want to leave! So I decided to see if I could pursue a career here.
Which brought you to our compliance team?
Yes. Even though I decided I didn't want to move forward with law school, I still really enjoy law and regulation etc, which is a big part of working in compliance. I was really hoping there would be an opening in Simplyhealth's compliance team, so I decided to stay on with Simplyhealth past September to see if a role or similar would come up. Then at end of November the position of Assistant Compliance Officer became available. I applied, and luckily was successful! I started with the team in January.
Can you tell us a bit about your role?
My role involves providing advice and support to the business on a range of regulatory compliance matters. I monitor external developments from the Financial Conduct Authority and Prudential Regulation Authority, and assess the potential impact of changes on the business and our customers. I write regulatory guidance and updates for the Board and senior management, as well producing monthly internal regulatory newsletters.
And what do you enjoy most about your role?
There are parts of it that can be really complex, which I love because it means I can really get my teeth stuck into it. I'm also really grateful to be working in such an excellent team - everyone is so supportive and they've helped me learn so much already. I also love the opportunities for development Simplyhealth offers. I've already been able to go on an external course, and right before I joined the Compliance team I actually got to take part in a 4 week 'Academy' held by our Internal Audit Team. I gained invaluable report writing and risk management skills which have been really helpful in my new role.
And when you're not at work, what do you like doing?
I'm pretty active - I love going for walks in the countryside and taking part in things like Dawn Breakers and Park Runs. I also enjoy cooking.
What would you say to someone considering a role at Simplyhealth?
I would definitely recommend applying! Not only is Simplyhealth a great place to learn and develop but they have some great benefits to support employees. At the moment I'm on the Student Loan Repayment Scheme in which, instead of paying into a pension, they match my monthly loan repayments to help me pay my loan off quicker.
