Supporting employee development at Simplyhealth

Here, Louise Honeybun explains how she found the career path for her with support from Simplyhealth. 

How you have progressed to your current job role?
I joined Simplyhealth aged 17 in September 2007 as a Customer Service Adviser. It was my first job after leaving college and I wasn't sure what career I wanted but I knew I wanted a break from studying and to earn some money.

I stayed in customer services until 2009 when I became a Quality Assurance Adviser, auditing the quality of customer service processes, such as claims payments. I decided to change my job as I wanted a role that would help me understand more about different aspects of the business and one that required more decision-making.

The following year I became an Investigation Technician in the counter fraud team, identifying and investigating potentially fraudulent activity. The role sounded exciting but I also felt ready to take on more responsibility and manage my own projects or cases. I realised I had an enquiring mind and was good at establishing facts and drawing conclusions, which seemed to fit well with the role. After four years, I was ready for a fresh challenge and after seeing a role in insight and research I thought it seemed to have a similar skill set and played to my strengths. So in July 2014 I took up my current role as Insight, Research and Development (IR&D) Executive, identifying areas of research and managing research activity.

What are you responsible for in your current role?
I'm responsible for running our online customer panel, simplyinsights, which takes place every month and asks customers their opinions on a range of topics, as well as our customer experience tracker.

I also help to source and manage our external programme of research, as well as conducting our own in-house research and working closely with other teams across the business to identify areas where research may be of use.

How has Simplyhealth supported your career development?
Working in various roles over the last eight years has allowed me to gain an overview of other areas and teams across the business. Through this it has helped me work out what job role I want to do.

I've also gained qualifications while working in my previous roles. During my time in the counter fraud team, Simplyhealth supported me to study while at work towards my University Certificate in Continuing Education (UCCE) Accredited Counter Fraud Technician qualification. Simplyhealth is also currently supporting me to complete a one-year study towards my Market Research Society (MRS) Advanced Certificate in Market & Social Research.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Every day is different and I enjoy the challenge that brings. It's also interesting taking the time to understand different areas of research. I particularly like the qualitative side of research which involves uncovering those emotional under-the-surface responses and now know that I want my career to involve this in the future.

What do you enjoy about working at Simplyhealth?
My role is quite varied but it also allows me to work flexibly, which is one of the great things about working at Simplyhealth. I live local to the office too, so it means I can work from home as and when I need to.
