Turning hobbies and passions into careers with apprenticeships

Posted on March 7, 2019

At Simplyhealth, we're committed to the personal development and career growth of our people and across the business a number of colleagues have taken apprenticeship opportunities.

Apprenticeships are a great way to develop your career, gain a qualification and develop new skills and we have a number of colleagues doing just that. To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Evie and James who have both been a driving force in their own career development, turning their passions into opportunities. They will now be starting Software Development Apprenticeships within our IT department.AU Apprentice Evie

Evie has moved from the Customer Contact team and transformed her hobby into the start of a career:

"I've always been fascinated with coding - It's like a virtual canvas!  I joined the customer contact team in July after I left college. In my customer advisor role, I'd speak directly with customers over the phone, email or live chat and help them with their queries.

I had an overview with the IT team and it really ignited my passion for coding. I began spending any spare minute I had learning how to code, watching videos on YouTube and then trying to re-create websites. I was often seen with my laptop on my lunch break using tools such as Udemy ... it's been my lifeline for learning!

I now feel like all my hard work paid off as I'll be starting my dream job in the web development team, which will give me some amazing experience and great qualifications that will help me continue in my future as a web developer.  I am truly grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to start, but of course I will miss working with my amazing colleagues in CCT!"

AU Apprentice JamesFrom customer calls to coding, James is seizing the opportunity to pursue a new career path:

"I've been at Simplyhealth for four years in customer facing roles. I started to look at coding a year ago, but after my daughter was born, as you can imagine, that went on the back burner!

I find it fascinating how websites are put together. I've been doing a Coding academy which takes you through every step towards building a webpage. There's so many different coding languages. Just like an artist, coding is a blank screen, then once you put words onto the screen it's such a great achievement.

The apprenticeship is quite a change from my current role in customer options, but when the opportunity came up, I thought it was right up my street.

I'm really looking forward to getting an industry recognised Microsoft qualification from the apprenticeship, bolster my knowledge and learn new things such as Java Script."
