I wanted to use my experience and skills in 34 years at Boots – 10 years as Managing Director – to benefit other organisations I admired. Boots gave me an interest in the health sector, so the offer to join the Simplyhealth Group Board in 2004 was just what I wanted. The non-Executive Director is not an easy role to play. You need to know when to ask difficult questions – in a way that contributes to, rather than undermines, the work of the Executives. At the same time, you can’t shirk responsibility for risk of appearing nit-picking.
